Thank Allah for believing family and community
“One of the greatest blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala after our own faith is that Allah surrounds us with believers.”
Muslims should recognize believing family and community as immense blessings, express gratitude through active care, and remain steadfast when faith creates family isolation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- A convert’s first Umrah reveals the joy of a non-Muslim parent showing interest in Islam.
- Prayer reminders and shared worship with Muslim relatives are reframed as blessings rather than burdens.
- The khateeb contrasts the support many Muslims inherit with the loneliness of converts and isolated believers.
- Listeners are urged to compare themselves with those who have fewer blessings and value faith over worldly possessions.
- Gratitude must become action through honoring parents, loving relatives, and appreciating Muslim family and community.
- The khutbah closes with prayers for steadfast faith, suffering Muslims, the sick, and the deceased.
In the khateeb's words
“this person said i wish i could go to the mosque with my mom i wish i could go to the mosque with my mom”
“one of the greatest blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala after our own faith is that Allah surrounds us with believers”
“the concept of shukr gratitude and thankfulness in islam is not something that's supposed to be passive it's supposed to bring about action”
“the people that Allah surrounds us with spouses parents children and community members and friends that are muslim make sure they feel appreciated”
For the dinner table
Allah has given many of us the special blessing of being surrounded by Muslim family and friends. Because that support is familiar, we may mistake it for something ordinary, while converts and isolated Muslims may long for it. The khutbah teaches us to reset our perspective, thank Allah, and remember that faith matters more than worldly comparison. Gratitude should become action: honor parents, show compassion to children and spouses, appreciate siblings, and make believers feel valued. We should also pray for those whose families do not share their faith and ask Allah to keep every believer firm.
- What is one prayer-related reminder from a family member that you could choose to appreciate differently?
- How can our family turn gratitude for one another into an action this week?
- What might make a convert or the only Muslim in a family feel less alone?
