Use your blessings before they are gone
“Take advantage of your youth before your old age.”
Because Allah's signs appear in creation, our changing lives, and death itself, believers should respond with gratitude and worship now, using youth, health, wealth, time, and life before they disappear, instead of postponing repentance until tomorrow.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens with gratitude, taqwa, and the blessings of Jumu'ah.
- Explains Allah's signs in creation and human life, using snow and aging as examples.
- Develops the teaching to take advantage of five blessings before their opposites: youth, health, wealth, free time, and life.
- Warns that postponing repentance and response until tomorrow can harden the heart.
- Connects awareness of death with janazah, Allah's mercy, and seeking protection from punishment in the grave.
- Uses Ali ibn Abi Talib's simple living and nighttime worship as an example of responding to Allah's signs.
- Closes by urging immediate action and praying for Muslims facing hardship in Gaza, Sudan, and elsewhere.
In the khateeb's words
“Take advantage of your youth Before your old age That's a sign”
“Righteousness and piety Is a state of heart Irregardless of the amount Of money you have Or you don't have”
“the body dies. If the heart doesn't receive that, the heart dies.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us to thank Allah and notice His signs in the world around us and in our own lives. The khateeb encouraged us to use five blessings well before they change: youth, health, wealth, free time, and life itself. He reminded us that having more money does not make someone more righteous, and encouraged us to ask Allah for barakah, or blessing, in what we have. Just as our bodies need food and water, our hearts need remembrance of Allah and connection with His revelation. Instead of always putting goodness off until tomorrow, we can take a step today, reflect on our day before sleeping, and ask Allah to cover us in His mercy.
- What is one blessing you noticed today, and how could you use it to help someone?
- What is one good thing you have been putting off that you could begin today?
- What could we do together this week to remember Allah and nourish our hearts?
