Islam must be lived completely everywhere

Masjid As-Sunnah · Kashiff Khan

“If you disagree about something, then bring it back to Allah and His messenger.”

The khateeb, at 23:28

In one sentence

Iman is a beautified blessing from Allah that must be thanked by entering into Islam completely, in every role, every place, and every dispute, rather than practicing it selectively.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Allah beautified iman in the believers' hearts and made them dislike kufr, fisq, and sin
  2. Gratitude to Allah brings increase; ingratitude brings punishment
  3. Knowledge must be paired with action: thankfulness means acting on Islam
  4. Enter into Islam completely (udkhulu fi's-silmi kaffah), Islam is not a buffet
  5. Warning from Bani Israel: pride and partial acceptance led them to reject and kill prophets
  6. Apply Islam to every role, son, parent, boss, worker, asking what Allah wants in each
  7. Islam is not a topi worn only in the masjid; the whole earth is a masjid
  8. When people differ, refer the dispute back to Allah and His Messenger and accept the judgment fully
Try this week
Whatever your role (son, daughter, parent, boss, employee, student), ask what Allah wants from you in that role and learn the relevant Quran and sunnah
Stop practicing Islam selectively; accept and implement it completely in dress, food, drink, speech, sleep, and work
Do not confine your Islam to the masjid; live as one who submits to Allah everywhere
When you differ with a spouse, parent, child, or neighbor, refer the dispute back to Allah and His Messenger and accept the ruling without resentment

Quran 4:59Obey Allah, the Messenger, and those in authority; disputes are referred back to Allah and His Messenger

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that the love of iman in our hearts is a gift Allah Himself placed there and beautified, so we owe Him thanks. Thanking Allah, he explained, is not just words, it means taking Islam completely, not picking the easy parts like food at a buffet. He warned against being Muslim only inside the masjid, like a prayer cap you put on for salah and leave in a box at the door. Whatever we are, a child, a parent, a worker, a neighbor, we should ask what Allah wants from us in that role and learn it and do it. And when we disagree with each other, we settle it by going back to what Allah and His Messenger said, and accepting that answer with a content heart. That, he said, is how we truly thank Allah for the blessing of iman.

  1. What is one part of being Muslim that is easy for you, and one part that is hard, and why do you think the hard one is hard?
  2. The khateeb said some people leave their Islam in a box at the masjid door. What would it look like if someone 'took their Islam with them' to school or to a game?
  3. If you and a friend disagreed about something, how could the Quran help you settle it?
