Truth must be lived through action
“It is not just words; it is followed up by actions.”
The khutbah argues that Islamic truth must be lived through action, requires honest engagement with colonial history and present oppression, and calls Muslims, especially the young, to stand for justice with trust in Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines sidq as truth embodied in actions, not merely spoken words.
- Uses Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Day to examine Indigenous history and colonial erasure.
- Describes broken treaties, disease, residential schools, land seizure, and continuing inequities.
- Connects colonial patterns to Palestine, displacement, and current oppression.
- Urges Muslim leaders and young people to wake up and stand for truth.
- Closes with a hadith about the victorious truth-bearing group and prayers for the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“so it is not just words it is followed up by actions”
“only 13 of them have been done and so the reality dealing with the truth is sometimes much different than what is pumped into our minds”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah taught that truth in Islam is not only something we say; it is something we live through our actions. The speaker asked us to learn the real history of the land around us, especially the suffering and resilience of Indigenous peoples, and to recognize that injustice can continue when people ignore the truth. He connected that history to Palestine and urged Muslims, especially young people, to stay awake, think critically, and stand with what is right. He reminded us that Allah is the ultimate source of power and that a group committed to truth will always remain. We can respond by learning, remembering, praying for the oppressed, and making our own conduct truthful and fair.
- What is one way we can show truth through our actions this week?
- What can we learn from the history of the place where we live?
- How can our family stand up for fairness when someone is treated unjustly?
