Five signs identify a true believer
The true believer (the Twelver mu'min) is recognized by five signs taught by Imam al-Askari, the 51 daily rak'ah, aloud basmala, ta'fir al-jabin, wearing the ring on the right hand, and Ziyarat al-Arba'een, and the ziyarah of Imam al-Husayn carries immense reward but must be performed with the reverence, purity, and intention modeled by Jabir ibn Abdillah al-Ansari.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Contrast the three signs of the munafiq (lying, betraying trust, breaking promises) with the five signs of the mu'min from Imam al-Askari
- Define the mu'min as the Twelver who takes Ahlul Bayt as imams, grounded in Quran 5:55 and the ring-giving of Imam Ali in ruku'
- Enumerate the five signs: 51 rak'ah (17 wajib + 34 nawafil), saying bismillah aloud in every salat, ta'fir al-jabin in dust after prayer, wearing the ring (especially aqeeq) on the right hand, and Ziyarat al-Arba'een
- Defend the riwayah that visiting Imam al-Husayn earns the thawab of the Prophet's hajj, while clarifying Shia ulama never said ziyarah replaces wajib hajj
- Recount Jabir ibn Abdillah al-Ansari's Arba'een visit via Atiyya al-Awfi: ghusl at the Euphrates, clean dress, scent, dhikr with every step, fainting at the grave, calling 'Ya Husain'
- Rebuke careless behavior at ziyarah (no ghusl, laughing, neglecting taharah) as damaging the image of all Shia, and urge dhikr, timely salat, taqwa, and tawba
- Close with Arabic duas for the Imam al-Mahdi, the believers, and the salawat on Muhammad and Ahlul Bayt
In the khateeb's words
“So the Mumin is known and recognized with these five signs that Al-Imam Al-Asikari, Salwa At-Rabbi Wasalamu Alaih, mentioned as we recognize the Munafiqeen or the Munafiq with three signs.”
“this is totally wrong, false they falsify they manipulate with their will the ulama say if you have no chance to go to the hajj for example, you have no money”
“my dear brothers and sisters the best thing that I recommend and advise myself on all of you”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb explained that a true believer is recognized by five signs, like praying the 51 daily rak'ahs, saying bismillah out loud, and visiting Imam al-Husayn, while a hypocrite is known by lying, breaking promises, and betraying trust. He shared a touching story of the Prophet playing and laughing with little Husayn, reminding us that showing love and even crying is mercy, not weakness. He explained that the Prophet himself encouraged us to visit Imam al-Husayn, so loving Husayn is really loving the Prophet and loving Allah. He also told how the companion Jabir walked to Karbala remembering Allah with every single step, warning us not to treat ziyarah like a fun trip to the park. He ended by advising everyone to be conscious of Allah and to ask forgiveness whenever we slip.
- If you had to pick one of the five signs of a believer to work on this week, which one would it be and why?
- The Prophet cried when his little boy passed away and said it was mercy, when do you think it's strong to show your feelings?
- Jabir remembered Allah with every step he walked, what's something you do every day that you could add a small dhikr to?
