Use this life to reach Jannah
“Allah has made this dunya as a vehicle for you to use to get to Jannah.”
Worldly life is temporary and should be used as a means toward the eternal afterlife, with the heart attached to Allah rather than wealth, status, or worldly distractions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines worldly life as temporary play, distraction, adornment, and competition using Surah al-Hadid.
- Connects attachment to worldly life with emotional distress, emptiness, delayed worship, and calamity.
- Uses the Prophet's traveler analogy to explain treating dunya as a means toward Jannah.
- Clarifies that Islam permits work, education, wealth, and success, provided dunya remains in the hands rather than the heart.
- Addresses communal suffering and urges gratitude, avoiding comparison, and racing toward Allah's forgiveness through good deeds.
- Closes with self-examination about whether one is living for the ending worldly life or the eternal life to come.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah has made this dunya as a vehicle for you to use to get to Jannah because that is your actual home, that is your actual life.”
“The first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning, that is truly what your heart is attached to.”
“Have dunya in your hands, not in your heart. The moment you let dunya occupy your heart, That is when you will lose.”
“When an opportunity opens up to help somebody, you be the first one.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that worldly life is temporary, even though it can look beautiful and important. Allah does not forbid us from working, studying, earning money, or enjoying good things; He teaches us not to let them control our hearts. We should be grateful for what we have instead of constantly comparing ourselves with others. We can use our time and resources to pray, give charity, help people, and seek Allah's forgiveness. The goal is to use this temporary life as a path toward the eternal life of Jannah.
- What is one good thing you can do before checking your phone tomorrow?
- When does something you enjoy become too important in your heart?
- Which opportunity to pray, help, or give can you take first this week?
