True gratitude brings goodness in both worlds
“You need to be honest with yourself.”
True gratitude to Allah brings goodness in this life and the next, and it must be expressed by recognizing blessings, worshiping sincerely, applying prophetic teachings, and making dua.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces a hadith about four qualities associated with goodness in this world and the hereafter, urging honest self-assessment.
- Emphasizes recognizing Allah’s countless blessings and thanking Him instead of complaining or using blessings for sinful purposes.
- Connects gratitude to Quranic themes, including Allah’s promise of increase and the rarity of truly thankful servants.
- Uses the Prophet’s lengthy worship as an example of gratitude and challenges listeners to implement hadith in daily life.
- Relates Mu'adh ibn Jabal’s teaching of a dua for remembrance, gratitude, and proper worship.
- Closes with supplications for believers, Muslims, the oppressed, and becoming grateful servants of Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“You need to sit down with yourself. You need to put your head down and think do you have them or no? And you need to be honest with yourself.”
“We are doing and buying a sin. We are disobeying the law with that money.”
“Say this dua before the salah if you have the time, if not after the salah. In both cases it's good.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us to be thankful to Allah for the blessings we often take for granted. The khateeb asked us to reflect honestly on ourselves and notice gifts such as our family, our health, and the opportunity to fast in Ramadan. He described the Prophet’s worship as an expression of gratitude to Allah. He reminded us that learning religious teachings should lead us to put them into practice. He also shared a dua taught to Mu’adh ibn Jabal, asking Allah for help remembering Him, thanking Him, and worshipping Him well.
- What is one blessing you noticed today that you usually forget to appreciate?
- How could you show gratitude through something you do for someone tomorrow?
- What would you like to ask Allah to help you improve in your worship?
