Hold nothing back from Allah
“For the believers, there's nothing that we hold back from Allah.”
Jumu'ah is a weekly reminder to submit to Allah wholeheartedly, holding nothing back from Him, while staying balanced between spiritual duty and worldly life, remembering that the believer possesses his wealth rather than being possessed by it.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening praise, shahada, and Quran recitation on taqwa and the unity Allah created between hearts
- Jumu'ah as a sign of Allah: the call suspends worldly commitments (bayah) and grants a short window of answered prayer
- Hadith on Friday as the best day: Adam's creation, entry into and exit from paradise, and the coming of the Day of Judgment, reminding us of our human family, our enemy shaitan, and our destiny
- After prayer, disperse: Islam makes active Muslims, not just praying Muslims; take the light back into the world while guarding the five gateways of the heart
- Story of Umar and the Prophet's palm-fiber mat: this world is not our destination, so don't get attached to it
- Second part titled 'Deciding to trust Allah and holding nothing back': recovery-community framing of what we withhold from Allah
- Quran 62:11 caravan incident: the Sahaba who left the khutbah for commerce show how the dunya distracts until we visit the grave
- Sibghatallah (the baptism of Allah): full submersion in salah, Quran, and obedience; closing story of Hanzala on balancing time for this and time for that
In the khateeb's words
“Bayah essentially meant that you go to the prophet or you go and make bayah to a person is you put your hand in their hand and you basically commit yourself to be loyal to them.”
“he said the best day on which the sun has risen is Friday.”
“I don't need a castle with servants because I don't plan to be here forever and I can't take it with me when I go.”
“And for the believers, there's nothing that we hold back from Allah.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah was about trusting Allah completely and holding nothing back. The khateeb reminded us that Jumu'ah is a weekly gift, a 'baby hajj', that reconnects us to Allah and to our bigger human family, since all of us come from one person, Adam (as). He told us not to drag ourselves to prayer but to come alive, with a happy face, and then to carry that light back out into the world afterward, because Islam makes active people, not just praying people. He shared the story of the companions who rushed off to a caravan during a khutbah, and reminded us that our provision comes from Allah, not from our jobs or money, the Muslim has his wealth; the wealth does not have the Muslim. He also comforted us with the story of Hanzala: it's normal to think about family and work sometimes, as long as we keep a balance, 'a time for this and a time for that.' He ended by challenging each of us to ask honestly: what am I still holding back from Allah, and to ask Allah to remove it so we can come closer to Him.
- If Jumu'ah is like a 'baby hajj' every week, what's one thing you could do to show up to it with more excitement?
- The khateeb said we take light from the masjid out into the darkness, where could you bring some light this week?
- What's one thing that's hard to 'let go of' for Allah, and why do you think it's hard?
