Use your time before it is gone
“Take advantage of your life before your death.”
Time is a precious trust from Allah, so believers should use their health, youth, wealth, and free time for worship, good deeds, and service before being held accountable.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Time is life, and success means using it well, as shown through Allah’s oaths by time.
- Health and free time are blessings people often appreciate only after losing them.
- Believers will answer for their life, youth, wealth, and knowledge, so they should regularly examine their deeds.
- The fisherman and pearl story illustrates how worldly desires can consume an entire lifetime.
- The sahaba organized their lives around prayer and learning, urging Muslims to use time before death, old age, poverty, or busyness.
- Listeners are urged to help suffering Muslims, drive carefully, pray calmly, and practice regular post-prayer and bedtime dhikr.
In the khateeb's words
“And the successful ones among us Al Muflihun Are the ones who take advantage of time They grab time They try to utilize time”
“Take advantage of five things Before the other five Will catch up with you Take advantage of your life Before your death”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that time is a precious gift from Allah, and none of us knows how much we have left. Through the story of a fisherman who spent his palace visit eating and sleeping, the khateeb encouraged us to notice distractions that make us miss opportunities to do good. He asked us to thank Allah for our health and everyday abilities, and to use our youth, wealth, and knowledge responsibly. He encouraged us to organize our days around prayer, take our time when speaking to Allah, and make room for regular remembrance. He also reminded us to help people who are suffering with whatever we can give and to remember them in our duas.
- What is one everyday blessing you would like to thank Allah for tonight?
- What small good deed could we make time for together tomorrow?
- Who could we help this week, and what could we do for them?
