Divorce should be a last resort
“A divorce should take place, with respect with good akhlaaq while still thinking well of one another.”
Islam treats divorce as a serious but legitimate last resort requiring deliberate timing, reconciliation efforts, and ihsan toward spouses, children, and families.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The Quran and Sunnah provide comprehensive guidance for family life and treat marriage as a serious covenant.
- Divorce is permitted when marriage causes greater harm than benefit, but reconciliation and counsel should come first.
- Divorce should follow proper timing, one pronouncement at a time, with a waiting period that allows reconciliation.
- Divorce is not itself evidence that someone is bad or unsuccessful.
- During a revocable divorce, spouses should remain in the marital home unless serious harm makes that unsafe.
- Separation should be handled with ihsan, respect, discretion, and protection of children's relationships with both parents.
- Children should honor both parents and learn to navigate family difficulty with patience and dignity.
In the khateeb's words
“It is not an indicator of whether you're a good person or not a good person. It is not an indicator of whether you are successful or unsuccessful in your marriage even.”
“a divorce should take place, with respect with good akhlaaq while still thinking well of one another.”
“Don't let it stress you out too much. It's a part of life. It's a part of life that sometimes we agree and sometimes we disagree.”
For the dinner table
Islam treats marriage as a serious, purposeful covenant, but it allows divorce when staying together causes greater harm. Couples should first seek reconciliation and wise counsel, and if divorce is still necessary, follow the proper timing and issue one divorce at a time. During a revocable divorce, spouses should preserve the possibility of reconciliation and avoid turning separation into a war between families. Even when parents separate, they should speak respectfully, protect the children's relationship with both parents, and continue showing ihsan, or excellence and good character. Children can honor both parents and learn to handle painful differences with patience and dignity.
- What does it look like to show respect when two people disagree?
- How can we help someone in our family feel loved by both parents?
- What lesson can a difficult family situation teach us about patience and good character?
