For the dinner table

Shukr, or gratitude, is more than saying “alhamdulillah.” It begins in the heart by recognizing that every blessing comes from Allah, continues on the tongue by praising Him and thanking people, and appears in our limbs through using blessings in the right way. The khutbah asks us to notice small gifts, health, water, safety, home, and faith, and not take them for granted. Our greatest blessing is iman, so we show gratitude by praying, coming to the masjid, and protecting our faith. When we are grateful, Allah promises to increase us, while gratitude ultimately benefits us, not Him.

  1. What is one small blessing you noticed today?
  2. How can you use one of your abilities in a way that shows shukr?
  3. Who is someone you should thank this week, and why?
