Honoring parents leads to lasting goodness
Honoring and caring for one's parents is a central path to Allah's pleasure and lasting reward, so families should build close parent-child relationships, raise righteous children, and regularly pray for their parents.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Connects the Friday gathering with remembrance and begins a lesson from Surat Yusuf.
- Uses Yusuf's dream and “Ya abati” to teach youth to trust and seek their parents' wisdom.
- Presents righteous children as an enduring investment through prophetic teachings and prayers.
- Emphasizes kindness, support, visits, and regular prayer for mothers and fathers.
- Closes with prayers for families, oppressed communities, deceased Muslims, and charitable action.
In the khateeb's words
“When we have children, we have to build this relationship. And for our young people, our youth, this lesson is for you. You have to build that relationship with your parents.”
“So when you have problems, as young, as youth, go to your parents. Don't be shy or arrogant. And ask for support and help.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that Yusuf turned to his father with trust, teaching young people to seek their parents' wisdom and support. Parents' care and sacrifice deserve gratitude, kindness, visits, and regular prayers. Raising righteous children is described as one of the greatest investments because their prayers can continue benefiting parents after death. The sermon also urges families to ask Allah to guide and protect their children. It closes by remembering suffering in Gaza, Palestine, and Lebanon and praying for safety and relief.
- When have you received helpful wisdom or support from a parent or elder?
- What is one way our family could show more kindness to our parents this week?
- How can we remember and pray for relatives who have passed away?
