Change yourself, then repair society
“How you interact with yourself cannot be detached from how you behave with the people around you.”
Muslims must honestly confront and change their own sins, then use their presence, citizenship, and collective action to repair the society around them for Allah's sake.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Shaitan beautifies sins by minimizing, postponing, and renaming them.
- Believers must face their faults, repent now, and account for their deeds before Judgment.
- Self-accountability extends into responsibility for one's community and society.
- Arlington Muslims are urged to collaborate, vote, advocate, obey laws, treat neighbors well, and pursue civic professions.
- The khutbah closes by connecting personal reform, public responsibility, and prayer for a hospitalized community member.
In the khateeb's words
“Our first step to being a true believer is being truthful to ourselves. Look at that mirror and look at the faults that you have and understand that there are faults that you can overcome.”
“How you interact with yourself cannot be detached from how you behave with the people around you.”
“It is not an accident of history that you are here. Rather it is a calculation from Allah that you are standing here.”
“That we look at the problem. And we fix it.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Shaytan can make sins seem small, delay our repentance, or give wrongdoing a nicer name. We should look honestly at ourselves and change while we still have time, because accountability comes before Allah. Our personal behavior also affects our families, neighbors, and wider society. As Muslims living in America, we should contribute positively, collaborate, vote, obey the law, and work for justice and better communities. We should also remember brother Ma'amun in our prayers and ask Allah to help us do good.
- What is one habit you could stop delaying and begin changing this week?
- How can our family help improve our neighborhood or community?
- What kind of work could help protect and serve other people?
