Worldly life fades, so return to Allah
“You always have a chance to fix your mistakes.”
Surat al-Kahf teaches that worldly life and its adornments are temporary, so we must turn to Allah without delay, guard our faith from deception, and repair relationships before death.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Introduces Surat al-Kahf as a Friday reflection and discusses the evidence for reading it weekly.
- Uses the surah's opening to stress that worldly adornment and life are temporary.
- Explains memorizing ten verses as protection from al-Dajjal and applies the warning to online misinformation.
- Uses the wealthy garden story and other Quranic examples to show that money, children, and status cannot prevent loss.
- Calls listeners to repent, reconcile, forgive, purify their hearts, and prepare for the Hereafter.
In the khateeb's words
“We are not the owners. We are the users. We using everything in this worldly life.”
“You always have a chance to fix your mistakes. To go back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. But don't delay. Don't delay. Because there is no time.”
“the dispute will never get me to Jannah the fight will never get you to Jannah so today insha'Allah do something for the sake of Allah”
For the dinner table
Surat al-Kahf reminds us that the world around us is beautiful but temporary, and that our real return is to Allah. The imam encouraged us to read it regularly, learn its message, and guard ourselves from distractions and falsehoods, including online. The young people of the cave show the courage to choose faith without postponing it, while the wealthy man warns us not to mistake possessions for permanence. We should use Allah's blessings to leave good deeds, return quickly when we make mistakes, and repair relationships through apology and forgiveness. The khutbah ended with prayers for purified hearts, forgiveness, community protection, and reunion in Paradise.
- What is one blessing we should use for a good deed instead of taking it for granted?
- What is one distraction we can limit this week so our hearts stay focused?
- Is there someone we should forgive or apologize to, and how can we do it kindly?
