Gratitude must be renewed every day

“Show gratitude to them because that is one way in which we show gratitude to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”

The khateeb, at 14:05

The khutbah argues that gratitude is a natural human duty that must be continually renewed through worship, awareness of blessings, proper use of gifts, care for others, and thanks to people.

The khutbah in 6 steps

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that gratitude is part of our original human nature, but hardship can make us forget it. Islam renews gratitude through everyday words and practices, from beginning prayer and waking with Alhamdulillah to noticing health, safety, food, faith, family, and friendship. We are told to complain less, credit Allah for our successes, use blessings in ways that please Him, share with people who have less, and thank those who help us. Even gratitude itself is a blessing, so we should keep returning to it.

  1. What blessing do you usually overlook during an ordinary day?
  2. How can we use one family blessing to help someone else this week?
  3. Who is someone we should thank for a blessing in our lives?
