Gratitude for Islam should guide our choices

“The do's and don'ts in the Quran and sunnah are not to restrict our freedom.”

The khateeb, at 28:45

In one sentence

Muslims should be grateful for the guidance of Islam and express that gratitude by practicing the deen more fully, trusting that divine prohibitions such as gambling protect people from real societal harm and lead to true success.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Open with praise of Allah and the duty of taqwa in daily life
  2. Contrast modern dismissal of religion with the pride Muslims should feel in Islam
  3. Use Canadian gambling statistics to show how a normalized vice destroys individuals and families
  4. Cite Quranic prohibitions of intoxicants and gambling as Satan's handiwork that breeds hatred and failure
  5. Explain that Islamic law does not restrict freedom but uplifts human beings and protects them from harming others
  6. Call believers to show gratitude for guidance not only verbally but through increased practice of Islam
  7. Reinforce the promise of paradise for those who believe and do righteous deeds without being overburdened
  8. Conclude with a resolve to let the deen guide every choice and a supplication for the oppressed and the sick

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that guidance to Islam is one of Allah’s greatest blessings, and we should be thankful rather than embarrassed about our faith. It warned that gambling can seem exciting or profitable, but its harms are greater and can lead to debt, regret, conflict, and distance from prayer and remembrance of Allah. Allah’s guidance is meant to uplift and protect us, not simply restrict our enjoyment. We show gratitude by saying Alhamdulillah and by gradually practicing more of Islam in our daily lives. The life of this world is temporary, while true and lasting success is in the Hereafter.

  1. What blessing of Islam are you especially thankful for today?
  2. Why can something that looks exciting or profitable still cause serious harm?
  3. What is one small good deed or act of worship you could practice more regularly?
