Thankfulness helps us notice Allah’s blessings
“We're all drowning in different blessings but we simply just don't realize them.”
Recognizing Allah’s everyday blessings and expressing shukr through the heart, words, righteous actions, and gratitude to people cultivates deeper gratitude and invites further blessing.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- A story about lost spare change introduces the idea that even small possessions are rizq from Allah.
- The khutbah identifies overlooked blessings including safety, sleep, water, food, transportation, forgiveness, and dua.
- It explains that gratitude is owed because Allah gives everything and promises increase to those who are thankful.
- It presents ways to cultivate gratitude: observe those with less, notice surrounding and bodily blessings, and study the Prophet’s habits.
- It defines three forms of shukr: acknowledging blessings in the heart, thanking Allah with the tongue, and using blessings in pleasing actions.
- It closes by urging gratitude toward people who help us and offering concluding supplications.
In the khateeb's words
“this isn't just money, this is rizq, this is something that Allah gave you, and because of that very aspect, because of the fact that Allah gave it to you, it now holds so much value.”
“We're all drowning in different blessings but we simply just don't realize them.”
“If we simply want to be given more, if we simply want Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to shower us with more blessings, then we simply need to thank Him.”
“The first stage of expressing gratitude is to express that gratitude with your heart, to express that gratitude in yourself.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that many ordinary things, sleep, clean water, food, shelter, health, and transportation, are gifts from Allah. We often overlook these blessings because they feel normal, but noticing them can awaken gratitude. The speaker encourages us to look at people who have less, reflect on our own bodies and surroundings, and study how the Prophet expressed thanks. Gratitude should live in our hearts, on our tongues through alhamdulillah, and in the way we use our blessings to help others and please Allah.
- What is one everyday blessing you usually overlook, and how could you thank Allah for it this week?
- How might spending time with someone who has less change the way you see your own life?
- What is one blessing you can use to help someone else?
