Muslim success means obedience, mercy, and right action

ICFV · Munir Eltal

“The Muslims should not be perceived as a burden for the best month of the year.”

The khateeb, at 33:01

In one sentence

A Muslim must judge success by obedience to the Quran and Sunnah, especially mercy and protection of innocents, while making Ramadan a means of ease, prayer, and deeper Quran connection.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Frames the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah through the believers’ fear, frustration, and disappointment after being denied Umrah
  2. Explains Surat al-Fath’s warning that unknown believing civilians must not be harmed
  3. Contrasts Quranic ethics of mercy and principled means with outcome-focused warfare
  4. Applies this worldview to civilian protection, Palestine, Sudan, and other humanitarian crises
  5. Offers three Ramadan priorities: ease for others, prioritizing Isha, and emotionally engaging with the Quran
Try this week
Be a source of ease for others during Ramadan rather than a burden at work or in the community.
Prioritize Isha in congregation, then perform as much Taraweeh as circumstances allow.
Give the Quran more focused emotional attention than even beautiful supplications.
Continue building a relationship with the Quran after Ramadan.

The khateeb used the story of Hudaybiyyah to explain that even when our feelings are understandable and our intentions are sincere, we must protect innocent people. He reminded us that mercy should guide our actions, and that we are responsible for doing things rightly while leaving the results to Allah. For Ramadan, he encouraged us to bring ease to others and be thoughtful about how our fasting affects people around us. He also reminded busy parents and workers to prioritize Isha rather than feel discouraged when they cannot stay for many additional prayers. Finally, he encouraged us to grow closer to the Quran and carry that relationship beyond Ramadan.

  2. What could our family do to understand and connect with the Quran together?
