Do every good deed and avoid every sin

“If it's something that you can stand by on the day of judgment and say oh Allah I did this and feel no shame or guilt then perhaps it's khayr.”

The khateeb, at 27:50

In one sentence

Allah simplifies moral decision-making by instructing believers to do any good He defines, no matter how small, and to avoid any evil He dislikes, no matter how small.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Too much freedom produces choice paralysis, illustrated by standing in a grocery store aisle.
  2. Allah gives a simple mandate: believers define good by what pleases Allah, not by personal opinion.
  3. Any good deed, even an atom's weight, will be rewarded, so stop filtering good by obligation, size, or visibility.
  4. The same principle applies to evil: any sin, even an atom's weight, has consequences.
  5. Modern temptations like sports betting show how accessible sin has become and why form does not matter.
  6. Use the Day of Judgment as the litmus test: if you cannot stand before Allah with an action, avoid it.
  7. Final formula: never underestimate any good, and never underestimate the danger of any sin.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that Islam gives us a clear way to make choices without telling us every tiny detail of life. We can ask whether something is pleasing to Allah, then move toward what is good and stay away from what displeases Him. Good deeds should never seem too small, because Allah promises that even an atom’s weight of good will be seen and rewarded. Likewise, we should not dismiss a wrong action as minor or harmless, because small choices can lead us down different paths. May Allah help our family recognize good, act on it, and avoid what pulls us away from Him.

  1. What is one small good deed you could do today that someone might not notice?
  2. When you have a difficult choice, how could you ask whether Allah would be pleased with it?
  3. How can one small wrong choice lead to another, and what can you do to stop that path?
