Peace and mercy build a strong community
“When you say, "As-salamu alaykum," you're saying it as a statement that no harm or evil from me will come upon you.”
The Prophet's first message upon entering Medina, spread peace, feed those in need, maintain family ties, and deepen private worship, offers the blueprint for building a compassionate Muslim community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Abdullah bin Salam's account of the Prophet's arrival in Medina and his first message.
- Explains salam as a promise of peace, mercy, respect, and non-harm.
- Calls listeners to feed needy people and care for anyone facing hardship.
- Urges forgiveness, mercy, and stronger family relationships, especially during conflict.
- Adds regular prayer, wudu, solitude, remembrance, and night worship.
- Closes with supplications for peace, justice, reconciliation, and support for suffering people.
In the khateeb's words
“The first message that the Prophet came with to establish this Muslim Ummah and this Muslim community was spread the peace.”
“So when you say, "As-salamu alaykum," you're saying it as a statement that no harm or evil from me will come upon you.”
“Family ties is forgiving when people have wronged you. When people are aggressive towards you, you go back towards them and you try to be merciful.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah began with the Prophet Muhammad’s arrival in Medina and the message he gave: spread peace, feed people in need, strengthen family ties, and worship Allah privately. Saying salam should mean more than repeating words; it should mean that others are safe from our harm and receive our respect and care. We were reminded to serve anyone facing hunger or hardship and to forgive relatives, especially when relationships are difficult. Alongside community service, we should protect time for the five daily prayers, wudu, remembrance, and night worship. The khutbah closed by asking Allah to make us people of peace, justice, mercy, reconciliation, and support for those who are suffering.
- How can we make our greetings show real kindness this week?
- Who might need our help or food right now?
- What could make family conversations gentler?
