Muslim influence grows through civic action
“Power comes from Allah SWT, influence comes from Allah SWT, success comes from Allah SWT.”
Muslim influence in society grows through Allah-given power joined with deliberate da'wah, civic engagement, community service, and support for organizations protecting Muslim religious rights.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Recites Surah Zumr passages about resurrection, accountability, tawhid, and the consequences of rejecting guidance.
- Uses early Meccan da'wah, Bilal's steadfastness, Umar's conversion, and the Hijrah to show influence growing strategically from individuals into civilization.
- Explains that power, influence, and success come from Allah while those in power shape society's narrative through civic processes.
- Urges listeners to know local officials, contribute their professional skills to the masjid, and do more than they did previously.
- Encourages those lacking time to work through community organizations, learn about a Sacramento Eid bill, and visit the information table.
In the khateeb's words
“My message to you all is very simple today, that in order for us to be influential in society, we must remember number one, that power comes from Allah SWT, influence comes from Allah SWT, success comes from Allah SWT”
“When I look in this masjid, and I've been, you know, with this community and a visitor to this community for many years, I see so many accomplished individuals in this community that have the potential to give back.”
“If you're a doctor, if you're a lawyer, if you're an engineer, if you're an accountant, have you gone to the masjid board and said, hey, I have some skill I would like to help.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that true power, influence, and success come from Allah. The khateeb used the Prophet's early da'wah, Bilal's steadfastness, Umar's conversion, and the Hijrah to show how patient, strategic effort can grow into a strong community. He encouraged us to participate in civic life and help shape how Muslims are understood in society. We can start by learning about local elected officials, offering our skills to the masjid, and supporting organizations when we lack time to do everything ourselves. The goal is to turn the abilities Allah has given us into service and lasting benefit for our families and neighbors.
- What is one skill Allah has given you that you could use to help the masjid?
- How can our family learn about and participate in our local community?
- What does it mean to influence people in a good way, like Bilal or Umar did?
