Build faith through lived example

“There is a huge difference between someone who claims and someone who lives the experience.”

The khateeb, at 24:25

In one sentence

Prophet Ibrahim modeled how to build unshakable faith in a family: connect with Allah long before hardship strikes, prepare your household through lived example rather than mere instruction, and turn every passed test into a legacy of advocacy for others.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Accept Allah's qadr with love; don't connect with Allah only in times of need, ask ahead of time, as Ibrahim did
  2. Ibrahim's dua for righteous spouse and offspring (Surah al-Furqan) as advance preparation
  3. Do not interrogate Allah's affairs; the meaning of wasiyya, living advocacy and a plan that outlives you
  4. Raise children through example before instruction; Hajar at Safa and Marwah was prepared, not surprised
  5. Bani Israel contrast: conviction vs. belief of convenience; warning against using Islam as a front for misconduct
  6. Ibrahim and Ismail raise the Kaaba's foundations in humility, turning their test into an eternal legacy; closing duas
Try this week
Make dua for future needs (spouse, children, job, major) well before the need arises, not only via istikhara at the moment of decision
Do not restrict your connection with Allah to times of hardship or need; build it continuously
Open deliberate family conversations (e.g., at the dinner table) about how blessings could be taken away, to prepare children for trials
Raise children by lived example rather than only halal/haram instructions
Fathers must actively support their wives in child-rearing rather than outsourcing it while working multiple jobs
Plan your legacy like wasiyya, share your plans with family so nothing surprises them after your passing
Never use a pious appearance (masjid attendance, religious talk) to gain trust for borrowing money or business deals you will not honor
If you have lost loved ones to accidents, drugs, or suicide, become an advocate who warns others instead of sitting back in grief

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about how Prophet Ibrahim raised his family through example, not just instructions. Before he was even married, he was already making du'a for a righteous spouse and children, teaching us not to wait until we're in trouble to turn to Allah. He showed us that real faith means accepting Allah's plan with love and passion, not just enduring it, and he prepared his wife Hajar and his son Ismail so well that when the hardest tests came, they answered with deep conviction instead of doubt. The imam warned us not to use Islam as a front, looking religious while treating people badly, but to truly live what we believe. And after passing their tests, Ibrahim and Ismail didn't sit back and relax; they built the Kaaba and invited people to learn from their story, which is why we still talk about them thousands of years later.

  1. What's something you could start asking Allah for now, even before you need it?
  2. What's one thing our family teaches by example, and one thing we only teach by rules?
  3. When something unfair or painful happens in the world, what helps you trust Allah's plan instead of just asking 'why'?
