Build faith on revelation, not people
“We should never put our trust in a human being completely.”
Because all people are fallible and can let us down, Muslims should ground their faith in revelation, self-accountability, beneficial knowledge, and service rather than tribal identity or dependence on individuals.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Reaffirms Islam as revelation and urges believers to reassess their spiritual foundations.
- Warns against placing complete trust in politicians, family, friends, scholars, or religious leaders.
- Distinguishes Islam and divine revelation from the flaws of Muslims, rejecting tribal Islam and pessimism.
- Calls believers to self-accountability and identifies cultural Muslims and self-righteous religious people as forms of self-deception.
- Explains that Satanic influence works gradually through tolerated environments, media, and habits that glorify evil.
In the khateeb's words
“We should never expect anyone to fulfill our expectations no matter how good they seem to us. We should never put our trust in a human being completely.”
“The prophets have passed away. The rest are people. Some will do good. Some will do bad. Some will be better than others. But all will sin and all will come up short.”
“There is Islam and there is Muslim. There is God's way. There is the revelation and the scripture and the truth. And then there is human beings and their flaws.”
“But the Qur'an is calling you to be a source of mercy to the world and compassion and benevolence and kindness.”
For the dinner table
Imam John reminds us to place our deepest trust in Allah and remember that even people we admire can make mistakes. He encourages us to understand our faith through studying the Quran and the Prophet’s example, so worship becomes more than a habit. We can hope for good in people while taking wrongdoing seriously and remembering that their failures do not define Islam. We also need to look honestly at our own mistakes and keep working to improve. Our faith should show in daily kindness, generosity, and care for people who need help.
- What is one way our prayers could help us become kinder to each other?
- When we make a mistake, what helps us admit it and make things right?
- Who could we help tomorrow, and what could we do for them?
