Cleanse the heart through remembrance
“You expand your chest by reading the Quran.”
In a heartless and oppressive time, Muslims must seek Allah’s purification and expansion of the heart through remembrance, Quran, prayer, and steadfast faith so they can respond with hope and mercy.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens by urging taqwa, truthful speech, obedience, and seeking Allah’s guidance.
- Uses the Prophet’s seerah and four openings of his chest to explain spiritual preparation.
- Connects oppression, violence, and indifference to diseases planted and nurtured in the heart.
- Warns against hearing revelation without obeying, using Bani Israel as a self-examination.
- Calls believers to cleanse their hearts, trust Allah’s promised success, and resist despair.
- Prescribes remembrance, Quran, sincere prayer, dhikr, and blessings upon the Prophet as spiritual tools.
In the khateeb's words
“The real crux of the matter is the matter of the heart. How is your heart? What state and what condition your heart is in?”
“When Allah wants to guide you, He expands your chest so that your chest is big enough to bear the burdens of this world.”
“Make effort every day to clean your heart so that you can see the manifestation of Allah's truth.”
“You expand your chest by remembering Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. You expand your chest by reading the Quran.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that the heart is where faith, hope, and moral courage begin. The speaker connected the Prophet’s preparation for his mission with our need to ask Allah to expand and cleanse our hearts when the world feels cruel or overwhelming. He encouraged remembrance of Allah, Quran, sincere prayer, and blessings upon the Prophet, while also learning to forgive and obey what we hear. When we see suffering, we should not surrender to despair; we should ask Allah for strength and become people who bring mercy and truth.
- What does it mean to have a heart expanded enough to face difficult news without losing hope?
- Which practice, Quran, prayer, dhikr, or salawat, could you try this week, and why?
- How can understanding someone’s weaknesses change the way we respond to them?
