Badr shows how faith builds strong communities
“What a beautiful community that had everything but had nothing.”
The Battle of Badr teaches that Muslim communities achieve true strength and victory by responding to Allah and His Messenger, prioritizing faith, remaining humble, and building togetherness above worldly means.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Ramadan 17 and Badr are presented as Yawm al-Furqan, distinguishing truth from oppression.
- The companions’ poverty, fear, and trust in Allah reveal their spiritual strength.
- Istijabah, immediate response and obedience to Allah and the Prophet, is presented as the community’s foundation.
- Sa’d ibn Mu’adh’s pledge illustrates willingness to sacrifice beyond minimal obligations.
- Community-building lessons include humility, faith-based bonds, and togetherness.
- Listeners are urged to study Badr and follow the companions’ example.
In the khateeb's words
“What a beautiful community that had everything but had nothing. They had Allah, But they had nothing. It was a principle-based community.”
“If this is what Allah wants, I will be at that door. Because Allah knows best.”
“All of that is necessary but secondary. All of that. Everything that we are doing as a community is necessary. But it comes number 2 after Allah.”
“So always being humble. Humble with Allah and humble with people. Brings about victory.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah uses the Battle of Badr to teach that a strong Muslim community begins by turning to Allah and responding to His guidance. The companions were small in number and lacked worldly advantages, but they trusted Allah, accepted sacrifice, and stood by their principles. We are reminded to stay humble, put faith before wealth and family ties, and build togetherness among believers. This week, we can read about Badr, ask Allah for help first, greet one another warmly, and practice obedience even when it is difficult.
- What is one situation this week where we can put Allah first?
- What does humility with Allah and with people look like at home?
- How could our family build more togetherness?
