Why religion gives life meaning and direction
“Religion and belief in Allah Azza wa Jalla is really the only thing that makes life living.”
Religion is necessary because creation points to a Creator, while revelation answers life’s metaphysical and moral questions and gives people meaning, stability, guidance, and community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The decline of Christianity and rise of religious non-affiliation make the question of religion urgent for Muslim families and youth.
- The order, provision, and harmony of creation point to Allah as its Creator.
- Science explains physical processes but cannot answer ultimate questions about purpose, the soul, death, or morality.
- Religion provides guidance, psychological grounding, meaning, identity, and unity beyond ethnicity and nationality.
- Criticisms of religion often reflect European Christian history and do not accurately describe Islam’s relationship with science, tolerance, or scholarship.
- The khutbah closes by affirming Islam as the greatest blessing and praying for steadfast faith during times of tribulation.
In the khateeb's words
“these things are something that are beyond the scope of physics they are in the realm of metaphysics”
“the one who has taken care of our physical needs is the same one is the same being who is going to take care of our spiritual needs”
“religion and belief in Allah Azza wa Jalla is really the only thing that makes life living. It's what makes life noble, makes life dignified.”
“Actually, the time of the most fruitfulness of the Islamic age, the golden era of the Islamic scholars, was the same time when they had the most scientific advancements.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that the world’s order and beauty can lead us to recognize its Creator. Science helps explain how things work, but religion helps answer why we are here, how we should live, and what comes after death. Faith can give people meaning, emotional strength, belonging, and dignity. He also explained that Islam has its own relationship with science and should not be judged only through the history of medieval Europe. We can support our families by discussing these questions honestly and asking Allah to keep our faith strong.
- What is something in nature that makes you think about Allah?
- What is one question science cannot answer by itself?
- How can our family make other people feel included and connected?
