Faith means accepting the Prophet's rulings
“They have to ask the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or follow the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam's rule in every part and every aspect of their lives.”
True faith requires both outwardly following the Prophet’s rulings and inwardly accepting them with humility, while resisting conflicting standards and helping the community remain spiritually grounded.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Interprets Quran 4:65 as requiring outward obedience and inward acceptance of the Prophet’s judgments.
- Contrasts divine guidance with jahiliyyah, modern standards, opinions, and desires that conflict with revelation.
- Uses Surah An-Nur and hadith to connect obedience with guidance, success, honor, and Paradise.
- Warns that persistent resistance can deaden the heart and that communal trials can affect everyone.
- Calls believers to cultivate humility and support one another in avoiding wrongdoing.
- Closes with supplications for humility, guidance, and faithful obedience.
In the khateeb's words
“They have to ask the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or follow the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam's rule in every part and every aspect of their lives”
“So it's not about what you say. It's about what you do.”
“Allah might come one day and stand between you and your heart so that you will never find your heart again”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that faith is not only what we say; it is acting on Allah’s guidance and sincerely accepting it in our hearts. The khateeb explained that visible practice and inner humility need to travel together. He warned that living by surrounding standards when they conflict with revelation can harden the heart, while responding to Allah gives it life. He also reminded us that communal trials can touch everyone, so we should gently support and teach one another. This week, we can examine one choice, learn what the Prophet taught about it, and practice obeying with humility.
- Where do our actions need to catch up with what we say we believe?
- What might wholehearted obedience look like in one ordinary choice this week?
- How can our family hold one another’s hands when someone is struggling?
