Final prophethood demands faithful action
“We cannot be a negative story that the earth is telling.”
Because Islam's final prophetic message is preserved through the Quran, Sunnah, and reliable guidance, believers must live it by defending the oppressed and treating Allah's provision as a trust.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces the finality of prophethood after explaining the role of miracles.
- Uses Quranic verses and the Hadith of Manzila to establish Muhammad as the final prophet.
- Explains why sealed prophethood does not eliminate the need for guidance.
- Uses Allama Hilli's divorce story to defend continuity with the Prophet's teachings.
- Prays for oppressed communities and calls for meaningful action against injustice and famine.
- Applies the message locally through donations, advocacy, and reducing food waste.
In the khateeb's words
“when we think about our theology we should be able to try and poke holes in our theology we should be able to try and investigate our theology”
“we should demand more from them. And it is our responsibility to demand more from them.”
“We have to waste less. You know, we have been blessed, as I said, with grocery stores that are full.”
“We cannot be a negative story that the earth is telling. It may tell it about other people. But we have a chance and a way of life that can prevent the earth from complaining about us.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah taught that Prophet Muhammad is the final messenger, and that Islam's preserved guidance gives us a lasting way back to Allah. It also reminded us that belief should be examined honestly and that sincere questions should be taken to trustworthy scholars. The speaker asked us to care about oppressed people everywhere and to seek meaningful action, not only words. Since food and the earth are blessings, we should donate where we can, waste less, take modest portions, save leftovers, and buy thoughtfully. Our daily choices can become either a good story or a negative one when the earth bears witness.
- What is one food-waste habit our family could change this week?
- How can we show care for someone who is suffering far away or nearby?
- Who is a trustworthy person we can ask when we have a big question about faith?
