True success is what faith makes of you

“Success is not in the million dollars you make.”

The khateeb, at 13:15

In one sentence

True success is measured by who faith makes you become, especially through khushu' in prayer, applying revelation, serving the community, and accumulating meaningful deeds for the Hereafter.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Reframes success from wealth and comfort to personal transformation through faith.
  2. Explains khushu' as aligning inner character and daily life with prayer.
  3. Connects faith with compassion toward suffering and responsibility for the ummah.
  4. Explains the Day of Judgment through multiple scales weighing sincere deeds and feelings.
  5. Concludes that salah with khushu' is among the weightiest measures of success.

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb asked us a big question: what does success really mean? He said success isn't how much money or food we have. It is who we become because of our iman, our prayer, our Quran and our Jumu'ah. He compared our hearts in salah to a car that needs its wheels lined up, so that our whole life points the same way as our prayer. He reminded us of Prophet Nuh, who built an ark in the desert while people called him crazy, and said we are building our own arks today with the guidance Allah sent us. Finally, he explained that on the Day of Judgment there will be many scales, not just one, so even a dua or a caring feeling counts. Just like at the gym, though, we have to keep adding weight, and the heaviest thing we can bring is a prayer made with a present heart.

  1. If success means 'who you become,' who do you want to become by next Ramadan?
  2. What is one thing that pulls your mind away when you pray, and what could help you focus?
  3. What is one small 'weight' you can add to your scale this week, like a dua, helping someone, or getting up for Fajr?
