Serving parents comes before voluntary worship
“A righteous child would act right away the first time.”
True righteousness requires both worshipping Allah and fulfilling people’s rights, especially the obligatory duty of honoring and serving one’s parents above voluntary worship.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines al-birr as comprehensive righteousness combining faith, worship, charity, promise-keeping, patience, and goodness toward people.
- Establishes dutifulness to parents as a major obligation immediately after worshipping Allah.
- Retells the story of Juraij to show the consequences of neglecting a parent’s call during optional prayer.
- Explains that serving parents, especially in old age, takes priority over voluntary worship and can be a path to Paradise.
- Warns parents against angry supplications and discusses spiritual desensitization caused by normalized immoral imagery.
- Identifies subtle disobedience through delayed responses, repeated requests, and making parents fear one’s anger.
- Concludes with supplications for oppressed people, a Qur’an memorization announcement, and a funeral prayer request.
In the khateeb's words
“a righteous child would act right away the first time that he has asked or even better than that he would know what his parents need before his parents even have to ask him”
“if you see your parents starting to talk to you like that then know that you are a disobedient child”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that al-birr, or righteousness, is a complete way of life involving faith, worship, kindness, patience, and keeping promises. A major part of righteousness is honoring our parents, whose rights can come before voluntary worship. The story of Juraij showed that even a devoted person must not neglect a parent’s call, and serving parents in old age can lead to Paradise. Children should respond promptly and gently, while parents should control their anger and pray for their children’s guidance.
- How can we make our home a place where parents and children feel respected rather than afraid?
- What could we say when we are angry instead of making a harmful dua?
