Divorce requires fairness, rights, and patience

“The grass is only greener where you water it, where you put effort into it.”

The khateeb, at 19:40

In one sentence

Divorce may be permissible and sometimes necessary, but it must be handled with fear of Allah, fairness, fulfilled rights, and protection of children from conflict.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Marriage is a sacred covenant, so divorce must follow Allah’s guidance and the Prophet’s example.
  2. Divorce should be conducted properly, without unlawful withholding of property, rights, or marital status.
  3. Parents must not use children as bargaining chips, and fathers must continue supporting their children.
  4. Relatives and friends should not fuel separation or turn spouses against one another.
  5. Loss of affection alone should not end a marriage; patience, goodness, and sustained effort matter.
  6. The community must uphold financial and parental responsibilities after divorce.

Marriage is a serious covenant with Allah, and divorce, while allowed, should be handled with fairness and God-consciousness. Spouses should not use anger, property, or children as weapons against one another. Parents remain responsible for their children, and children should be able to maintain loving relationships with both parents when it is safe. The khateeb also reminded us not to give up on a marriage simply because affection becomes difficult, since patience and effort can restore goodness. Families and friends should support people wisely rather than making conflict worse.
