Faith calls us to prevent local wrongs
“What can I do in areas that Allah has given me control over to prevent oppression in my local area?”
In disorienting times of oppression and political disappointment, believers should reject apathy by cultivating faith, knowledge, righteous action, community accountability, and personal responsibility.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Acknowledges anxiety, disillusionment, and Gaza’s suffering amid global injustice.
- Interprets troubling events as tests and reminders that worldly power is not divine approval.
- Calls listeners to prevent oppression, falsehood, misguidance, and corruption within their own spheres of influence.
- Emphasizes knowledge as the foundation for balanced faith, action, and accountability.
- Closes by urging stronger local communities, participation in community programs, and continued hope.
In the khateeb's words
“What can I do in areas that Allah has given me control over to prevent oppression in my local area, to prevent falsehood in my family, to prevent misguidance amongst my friends?”
“You still have to pay in taxes. You still have to pray five times a day. You still have to come to the message and figure out where can I lend a helping hand.”
“You either maintain a consistent attitude of growth. Towards God! Or you're going to naturally not just stay stagnant. You're going to get worse.”
“Hope is what keeps us all alive and reminds us that we have a lot of work to do.”
For the dinner table
This khutbah acknowledged that many of us feel anxious and disillusioned by injustice, especially the suffering in Gaza and the wider world. It taught that faith means asking what Allah has placed within our control instead of letting distant events make us apathetic. The way out of loss is faith, righteous action, standing together for truth, patience, and learning. Even when politics are beyond us, we can pray, seek knowledge, care for our families and neighbors, strengthen our local community, and keep growing toward Allah. Hope and shared responsibility help us serve the oppressed rather than become part of oppression.
- What is one responsibility Allah has placed within your control this week?
- What helps you keep growing toward Allah when life feels discouraging?
- How can our family hold one another accountable with kindness?
