Keep your faith while changing your path
“We don't change our belief, but we change our position.”
The khutbah teaches that Muharram and the Hijrah call Muslims to preserve their aqidah, change harmful circumstances when necessary, and continually migrate from sin toward obedience, especially by cultivating faith in the next generation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls listeners to taqwa and dependence on Allah for guidance.
- Uses the arrival of Muharram to urge reflection on the past and commitment to worship.
- Presents the Hijrah from Mecca to Medina as preserving aqidah while changing one's position.
- Uses Abu Bakr's story to stress reliance on Allah and steadfastness.
- Warns parents to plant aqidah in children and not let worldly attachments obstruct faith.
- Broadens hijrah into leaving sins for obedience and resisting pressures such as social media.
In the khateeb's words
“So, we don't change our belief, but we change our position.”
“remove your protection and leave me under the protection of Allah.”
“The only message you see I'm talking about hijrah is mean make sure your aqidah is with you.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah used the beginning of Muharram to invite us to look back with humility and keep worshiping Allah until we return to Him. The Hijrah teaches that we should hold firmly to our aqidah while being willing to change our situation when it threatens our faith. The khateeb especially urged parents to plant faith in their children so they can carry it into school, university, and adulthood. He also described hijrah as leaving sins and moving toward obedience, including resisting pressures that come through social media. The message is to rely on Allah, protect our faith, and take steady steps toward what He loves.
- What is one thing that helps you remember Allah when nobody else is watching?
- How can our family help each other keep our faith strong at school, work, or online?
