Remember death to live with purpose

“The remembrance was so that we prioritize our lives correctly.”

The khateeb, at 19:32

In one sentence

Regular, healthy remembrance of death should move Muslims out of heedlessness, clarify life’s purpose, and lead them to prioritize Allah, worship, family, accountability, and service to others.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Reflect on the suffering of Muslims in Gaza, Palestine, Sudan, and other oppressed regions, and on the accountability of those in power.
  2. Introduce death as a universal certainty and explain why the Prophet frequently reminded people of it.
  3. Explain how remembering sudden death breaks heedlessness and puts worldly pleasures, goals, and the afterlife in perspective.
  4. Clarify that death-awareness should not cause depression, but should help believers recognize their purpose and enjoy blessings without heedlessness.
  5. Apply the reminder to speech, family, parents, relationships, prayer, worship, and deciding how to meet Allah.
  6. Close with prayers for oppressed Muslims and announcements about prayer-space etiquette, parking, membership, programs, calendars, and donations.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us to care about people facing hardship, including families in Palestine and Sudan, and to appreciate the comforts Allah has given us. The khateeb’s main message was that remembering death can help us use our lives well. He explained that this reminder is meant to guide our priorities, rather than leave us depressed or afraid. He encouraged us to take quiet time to reflect on our direction, our prayers, and how we treat others. As a family, we can put this into practice by speaking kindly, caring for our parents, making things right when we hurt someone, and helping people in need.

  1. What comfort at home are you thankful for, and how could we help someone who is missing it?
  2. What helps you find a quiet moment to think about your choices?
