The best community serves all humanity
“This umma was formed to serve humanity, whole of humanity, not just the Arabs.”
Muslims are the best community only when they enjoin good, resist evil, trust Allah, serve all humanity, and live a balanced faith in the present world.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with testimony and gratitude for the privilege of attending Jumu'ah.
- Explains Quran 3:110 as defining the best community through good, moral resistance, and belief.
- Defines ma'ruf and munkar as universal responsibility for justice, kindness, honesty, and human dignity.
- Presents Muhammad's mercy as extending to people, animals, plants, and the environment.
- Calls for balance between worship and worldly responsibilities, carrying mosque peace into society.
- Applies the message to America, where freedom requires responsibility and Islam must be lived in contemporary circumstances.
In the khateeb's words
“and it's a universal mission it's not a local it's not uh isolated this is a universal statement for all the ways of life and all the ideologies that's active”
“our umma wasn't created to be in isolation to be to live for itself alone this umma was formed to serve humanity whole of humanity not just the arabs”
“freedom it's not just it's not just a word that you take for granted freedom you have to earn and freedom comes with responsibility”
For the dinner table
The khateeb taught that Muslims are called the best community only when they call people toward what is right, resist what harms human dignity, and trust Allah. This mission is for all humanity, and mercy should include people, animals, plants, and the environment. He urged us to follow a middle path by worshiping Allah while fulfilling our responsibilities in the world. He reminded us that freedom is a gift with responsibility, so we should live our Islam faithfully and wisely in today's America. The message is to carry the peace of Jumu'ah beyond the mosque and let the Quran guide our conduct.
- Where did you notice someone calling others toward what is right this week?
- What could mercy toward animals, plants, or the environment look like in our family?
- How can we balance prayer, school or work, and responsibility to other people?
