Use your blessings to reform society

“I have a responsibility in this world and I want to do whatever I can with what I've been given to fulfill that responsibility.”

The khateeb, at 30:13

In one sentence

Allah tests privileged people with blessings, and societies are protected when believers reject self-sufficiency, use what they have for others, and actively reform injustice.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. The Qur'an identifies privileged elites who misuse blessings as a cause of societal downfall.
  2. The khutbah examines excuses for privilege: wealth proves superiority, tradition justifies the status quo, and personal effort explains everything.
  3. Qarun illustrates how blessings should serve the hereafter, benefit others, and avoid corruption.
  4. Societies are preserved when people actively reform wrongdoing rather than merely remaining personally righteous.
  5. Believers should embrace struggle for mercy, justice, community service, and responsible institutional support.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah taught that having more money, comfort, or influence is not proof that we are better or right. Allah gives blessings as a responsibility, so we should use them to help people, resist oppression, and make our communities better. The story of Qarun showed the danger of claiming that success comes entirely from ourselves, while Uthman's well showed how generosity can create lasting benefit. Every person has struggles, but the important question is what we choose to struggle for: mercy, justice, patience, and service. At home, we can name our blessings and choose one practical way to share them this week.

  1. What is one blessing you have that could help someone else this week?
  2. When you hear something about Islam online, who can you ask before believing it?
  3. What could doing good look like in our family or neighborhood?
