The Quran must be understood and applied
“Understanding the Quran is much more important than just saying it with a melodic tone.”
The ummah's weakness and regression stem from treating the Quran as a talisman rather than understanding and applying it, and Surah Ibrahim teaches that the path back from darkness to light begins with speaking truth to power.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening on taqwa and speaking a true, accurate word (qawlan sadeedan)
- Why the world progressed while Muslim lands regressed, contrasted with South Korea and China
- Misuse of the Quran as an amulet versus its true purpose: understanding and applying its meaning
- Surah Ibrahim's opening verse as the surah's thesis: bringing humanity from darkness to light
- Unchecked oppression escalates until even monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques are destroyed
- First solution: speaking truth to power, illustrated by Imam Malik's refusal to remove the hadith
- The parable of the good word as a firmly rooted tree versus the rootless evil word
In the khateeb's words
“understanding the Quran is much more important than just saying it with a melodic tone”
“where Allah spent the most time in the Qur'an that's where we us Muslims have to spend the bulk of our energy as well”
“oppression against any group is equally abhorrent people that are non-combatants that are not fighting you leave them alone”
“the first step in resisting and in defending the oppressed is speaking up is saying the truth”
For the dinner table
The khateeb spoke about how weak the Muslim ummah has become, pointing to the suffering in Palestine and India. He asked why the Muslim world fell behind while other nations advanced, and said the answer isn't that we lost the Quran, it's that we stopped trying to understand it, sometimes treating it like a good-luck charm instead of a guide. Allah sent the Quran, he explained from Surah Ibrahim, to bring people out of darkness into the light of knowledge and justice. The first step to changing our situation is simple but brave: speaking the truth, even to powerful people, the way Imam Malik did even when he was punished for it. He promised to share more solutions from Surah Ibrahim in upcoming khutbahs.
- What's the difference between reading the Quran beautifully and actually understanding what it says?
- If you saw something unfair happening at school, what would make it hard, or easy, to speak up?
- Why do you think the truth is compared to a tree with deep roots?
