Use every breath to prepare for the hereafter

“A breath can seem like such a simple thing until you can't take one.”

The khateeb, at 5:57

In one sentence

Because every breath is a limited gift from Allah, Muslims should use their time for gratitude, worship, and preparation for the eternal life of the hereafter rather than becoming absorbed in the dunya.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Breathing reminds believers that Allah has given them life, time, repentance, and opportunities for good deeds.
  2. The dunya is temporary while the hereafter is true life, and Shaytan tries to consume believers’ breaths in worldly distraction.
  3. Believers should seek good in both worlds, respond promptly to salah and Jumu'ah, and leave worldly business for Allah’s remembrance.
  4. Adam’s first breath represented human life, purpose, authority, and a grateful response of alhamdulillah.
  5. Muslims should resist Shaytan, keep their hearts open to Islam, and use their breaths in worship and remembrance.

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb asked everyone to stop, take a deep breath, and say alhamdulillah. Breathing feels simple until we can't do it. Every breath Allah gives us is a gift and a fresh chance to ask forgiveness and do good. But our breaths are limited, and the shaytan wants us to spend all of them chasing this world instead of getting ready for the real life of the Hereafter. He reminded us that when Allah breathed the soul into Prophet Adam, Adam's first word was 'alhamdulillah,' so gratitude is part of who we are. We make du'a that Allah opens our hearts to Islam so that prayer and good deeds feel as easy as breathing.

  1. What was the first thing Prophet Adam said after Allah gave him life, and what is something you're thankful for today?
  2. If every breath is a chance to do something good, what is one good thing you could do tomorrow?
  3. When you hear the adhan, what is one thing you could stop doing so you can go pray faster?
