Family wellbeing begins with contentment
“The most pleasant life you can have is when you are content with what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given you.”
True family wellbeing comes from taqwa and qana'ah, working responsibly, living within one's means, earning halal income, and prioritizing generosity and shared family worship over status-driven consumption.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah frames taqwa as the key to success and financial stress as a source of family conflict.
- It defines qana'ah as contentment with Allah's provision and contrasts it with the belief that more money guarantees happiness.
- Teachings from Imam Husayn and Imam Ali distinguish contentment from passivity and warn against debt-driven status spending.
- Stories about Imam Ali and Sayyid Abbas Musawi illustrate how contentment can preserve harmony, worship, and trust in Allah.
- The khateeb advises providers to work with sincere intention, earn lawfully, and support family members generously but moderately.
- He recommends avoiding unaffordable promises, eating together, and building family unity through shared worship and gratitude.
In the khateeb's words
“But when you've put your effort, when you have done your business, if the result is what the result is, it's not more than what you had hoped for, then you have to be content with what Allah has decreed for you.”
“The most pleasant life you can have is when you are content with what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given you.”
“Do not be stingy because it creates resentment in the heart. It creates unhappiness in the family.”
“This hadith says that when a family sits together and they eat together, Allah and His angels also send salawat and rahmah upon them.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb spoke about qana'ah: being content with what Allah has given us while continuing to work hard and do our best. He reminded us that financial worries can spill into family relationships, and that trying to match other people's spending can add unnecessary pressure. He encouraged us to earn honestly, work with the intention of pleasing Allah, and provide for our families without being stingy or extravagant. He also explained that caring for our family is an obligation, while giving voluntary charity is recommended. By making room for worship, learning, good character, and meals together, we can nurture love and unity in our homes.
- What is something you already have that brought you happiness this week?
- When you want something because other people have it, what could help you decide whether you really need it?
- What could we put aside during dinner to give each other more attention?
