Mosques should sustain the whole community
“We need our own village we need our own institutions to hold us to sustain us.”
A mosque must be more than a place for prayer: through beautiful spaces, sustained learning, service, and inclusive community life, it can guide and sustain Muslims through uncertain times.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The speaker uses Quranic guidance and Muslim history to frame mosques as places of orientation, learning, and community, not only prayer.
- He reports expanded facilities, including a new worship space and two schoolhouses, emphasizing sustained education for children.
- He argues that physical infrastructure must support educational programs, spiritual growth, and beautiful, locally rooted community spaces.
- He presents ICCP as a diverse, self-sustaining village and ship of salvation grounded in safety, respect, and volunteer service.
- He previews an ICCP app and asks families to test a free educational app for refugee children.
- He closes with Ramadan preparation, community announcements, relief efforts, and prayers.
In the khateeb's words
“there is a beauty in this space and that's also very important”
“when we think of this center when we think of ICCP this must be a center of learning where every age group every group every part and segment of our society has the opportunity to learn”
“we need our own village we need our own institutions to hold us to sustain us”
“if you find even something you know dirty on the floor and you pick it up that's a khidmah that's something good that you've done”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that a mosque is more than a place to pray. It should be a home for learning, children’s education, beautiful and welcoming spaces, and service for people of every age and background. He shared how ICCP is growing its buildings and programs, including future apps, while asking the community to keep volunteering and preparing for Ramadan early. He described the diverse community as a ship that carries everyone safely when people respect one another and work together. He also mentioned relief efforts, community events, and a free educational app for refugee children that families may be invited to test.
- What is one way you could help make our mosque feel safe and welcoming?
- If our mosque is a place of learning, what would you like to learn there?
- What is one small service you could do before Ramadan begins?
