Remember the good others have done
“One small mistake of a person makes us forget all the good they did.”
Islam teaches believers to remember and repay kindness, focusing on the good done by others rather than allowing isolated wrongs to erase gratitude, following the Prophet’s example.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Quranic and prophetic exhortations toward faith, truthfulness, God-consciousness, and avoiding destructive traits.
- Frames community life and highlights people who have done good as an often-overlooked category deserving special recognition.
- Uses episodes from the Prophet’s life to show loyalty and repayment of favors, even toward non-Muslims and difficult figures.
- Applies the lesson to parents, spouses, teachers, and friends by urging listeners to remember past blessings during present conflicts.
- Presents loyalty to the Prophet through salawat, revived sunnah, and supplication as ways of repaying his immense kindness.
- Closes with practical questions about who helped one’s family, prayers for oppressed communities and loved ones, and the congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“one small mistake of a person makes us forget all the good they did”
“the prophet's greatest sunnah was that he would always out-gift anyone who gifted him”
“there's enough good people that did good things for us in the world that we don't have to even think about people who did negative things to us”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us to remember and repay the kindness people have shown us. The Prophet never forgot a favor, even when it came from someone who was not Muslim or who had caused difficulty. We should not let one hurtful moment erase years of goodness from our parents, spouses, teachers, friends, or neighbors. We can show gratitude by honoring our parents, answering their calls, thanking those who helped our family, and returning good with even more good. We can also express loyalty to the Prophet by sending salawat and keeping his sunnah alive.
- Who has helped our family in a way we may not know about, and how could we thank them?
- When someone makes one mistake, how can we remember the good they have done?
- What sunnah or act of gratitude can you practice this week?
