Islam calls us beyond race and culture
“When you become Muslim, you want to flee away from what's displeasing to Allah.”
Muslims should return to the Quran and Sunnah, overcome racial and cultural barriers, and share Islam across languages while learning from one another.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The speaker recounts his conversion, his father's search, and the language gap facing Spanish-speaking Muslims.
- He recalls Al-Andalus and Muslim contributions such as algebra to challenge Western ignorance about Islam.
- He presents Umrah as a journey where race, wealth, and status fall away before Allah.
- Using Quran 49:13, he says human diversity exists so people can know one another, not discriminate.
- He warns that abandoning the Quran and Sunnah revives arrogance, cultural distraction, and racial judgment.
- His conversion stories contrast harmful, judgmental outreach with patient guidance and welcoming community.
In the khateeb's words
“We realize that we no longer see Skin Race Social class Status It is a journey of the hearts Umrah Hajj This visiting to Allah's house Is the journey of the hearts”
“Flee to Allah You know what happens To the heart When you become Muslim You want to flee away From what's displeasing To Allah And flee to that Which is pleasing to Allah”
For the dinner table
Shaykh Mujahid Fletcher shared how he embraced Islam and helped his family learn about it in Spanish. When he found very few Spanish resources, he and his family worked to make Islam more accessible to others. He reminded us that our different backgrounds are an invitation to get to know one another, and that worship brings hearts together beyond race or wealth. He also described how harsh words once pushed him away from the Muslim community, showing how much our welcome and kindness matter. His message encourages us to stay close to Allah’s book and the Prophet’s example, care for our parents, and serve people sincerely.
- How could we help someone feel welcome when they are new to our mosque or group?
- What is something you would enjoy learning from a person whose background is different from yours?
