Close companionship helps us follow the Sunnah
“We have to take the first step, which is come together, be together.”
Reviving suhbah, learning, growing ethically, and solving communal problems through close companionship, is essential to following the Prophetic path in an increasingly isolated, screen-mediated society.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines suhbah as being with truthful, formative companions and emphasizes the influence of close friends.
- Presents face-to-face companionship as the primary means of transmitting religious knowledge, citing the Hadith of Jibril and scholarly examples.
- Contrasts transformative human learning with screen-based information and technology-driven education.
- Shows how suhbah cultivates ethical wisdom through stories of al-Hasan al-Basri and al-Hasan and al-Husayn.
- Argues that communal togetherness overcomes division and combines members’ skills to address contemporary problems.
- Concludes by urging listeners to revive the Sunnah of suhbah against modern loneliness and isolation.
In the khateeb's words
“Show me a person's friends and I'll show you their future, as they say.”
“we're biologically wired as human beings to learn from other human beings, not from screens.”
“Thank you for showing me that I did something wrong and at the same time preserving my dignity in how you're doing it.”
“we have to take the first step, which is come together, be together.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that suhbah means staying close to people who help us live Islam well. We do not learn only by collecting information; we grow through trusted teachers, good friends, and real companionship. Being together also teaches patience, wisdom, and how to correct others without shaming them. When a community comes together, its different gifts can meet shared problems, especially in a lonely, screen-filled world. We can revive this Sunnah by choosing good company, seeking living examples, and making time to be together.
- Who helps you become a better person, and what do they teach you?
- How can we correct someone kindly without embarrassing them?
- What is one way our family can spend more time together with other people this week?
