Meet blessings with gratitude and hardship with patience
“If he experiences pleasure, he thanks Allah and it is good for him; if he experiences harm, he shows patience and it is good for him.”
A believer should meet prosperity with gratitude and responsible sharing, and meet hardship with patient trust in Allah while supporting those who grieve.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Quranic exhortations to truthful speech, perseverance, and God-consciousness.
- Explains four dimensions of gratitude: recognizing blessings, praising Allah, using blessings well, and thanking people.
- Describes hardship, grief, and the community’s responsibility to provide condolences, visits, prayers, and practical support.
- Frames worldly life as temporary testing, with ultimate justice and reward in the hereafter.
- Defines sabr as steadfastness that does not deny pain, illustrated through the Prophet’s losses and persecution.
- Concludes with prayers for Muslims and Palestine, a Gaza water event announcement, and congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“if he experiences pleasure he thanks Allah and it is good for him if he experiences harm he shows patience and it is good for him”
“the third aspect of being gratefulness is making best use of it not wasting it and sharing it with less fortunate”
“the person going through such circumstances is in most need of support of the rest of the family and community at large”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Muslims should be grateful when life is going well and patient when life becomes difficult. Gratitude means recognizing Allah’s blessings, praising Him, using blessings responsibly, sharing with people in need, and thanking those who help us. Patience does not mean pretending that grief does not hurt; it means trusting Allah while continuing to do what is right. When someone suffers, families and communities should offer prayers, visits, condolences, and practical support.
- What blessing could we use more responsibly or share with someone else?
- How can we support someone who is grieving?
- What does patience look like when someone is still feeling sad?
