Success requires teamwork, planning and mentorship
“Teach your children swimming, archering, horse riding, or any other sport that makes them fit.”
In one sentence
The recently concluded World Cup offers concrete Islamic lessons: success, for individuals and communities, comes from teamwork, placing the right people in the right roles, deliberate planning, and mentorship, while celebrity worship must be avoided and physical fitness pursued.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening: the World Cup just ended, and like every event in life it carries deeper lessons worth extracting
- Lesson 1, teamwork and collaboration: 11 players win together; Surah al-Ma'idah commands cooperation in righteousness
- Lesson 2, putting the right person in the right place, as the Prophet assigned Bilal, Mu'adh, Khalid and others by ability
- Lesson 3, planning and strategy: Yusuf's 14-year plan saved Egypt and the Hijrah was carefully planned
- Lesson 4, leadership and mentorship: the captain and the coach; the hadith on appointing an ameer; seek a mentor and mentor others
- Second khutbah: warning against celebrity worship syndrome, admire athletes only in what they are good at
- Physical fitness is an Islamic duty: Umar's command to teach children swimming, archery and riding; summer exhortation to go outside and exercise
- Janaza announcement for an elderly sister, prayers for the deceased, and closing dua
Try this week
Collaborate and work together as a community with one goal instead of fragmenting
Put the right person in the right role in every community undertaking
Act, but act with a plan at the individual, family, and community level
Appoint a coordinator/ameer whenever a group works or travels together
Actively seek a mentor in life, and if experienced, mentor young people
Admire celebrities only in what they are good at, not in every aspect of life
Exercise during the summer: go outside, hike, jog, play soccer; bike or walk instead of driving when possible
