Prepare for Ramadan through stronger salah

“We make wudu to purify our external selves and we make salah to purify our internal selves.”

The khateeb, at 24:07

In one sentence

As Ramadan approaches, believers should draw on the lessons of Isra and Mi'raj, especially purification, nighttime worship, and salah, to strengthen their connection with Allah.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Frames Ramadan preparation as a spiritual task, not merely physical preparation for fasting.
  2. Recounts Isra and Mi'raj after the Prophet's Year of Sadness and describes its major events.
  3. Explains the journey as consolation, strengthening, and preparation to receive the gift of salah.
  4. Connects the Prophet's visions to warnings about missed prayer, interest, broken trusts, and backbiting.
  5. Presents salah as believers' daily mi'raj, with wudu cleansing outwardly and prayer cleansing inwardly.
  6. Encourages improving salah and making time for nighttime worship during Ramadan.
  7. Closes with prayers for reaching Ramadan, a funeral prayer, and a brief mosque announcement.

For the dinner table

Ramadan is close, and preparing for it is more than getting used to hunger or longer prayers. The khutbah revisits Isra and Mi'raj, when Allah comforted and strengthened the Prophet Muhammad after deep hardship and gave the ummah the gift of salah. Salah can become our own daily mi'raj: wudu cleans the outside, while prayer cleans and reconnects the heart. We are encouraged to improve our prayers and make room for nighttime worship, especially as Muslims face suffering around the world. We can ask Allah to let us reach Ramadan and fill our worship with faith, calm, and steadiness.
