Prayer is five chances to return

“Think I get to go pray.”

The khateeb, at 8:00

In one sentence

Salah is both an obligatory duty and Allah’s recurring mercy: five daily opportunities to pause, reconnect, seek help and forgiveness, and return to Him despite imperfect faith.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Salah provides five daily breaks from burdens and opportunities to reconnect with Allah.
  2. Believers should view prayer as a gift and opportunity, not merely an obligation.
  3. The adhan recalls Allah amid modern distractions, while schedules and children should be organized around prayer.
  4. Prayer on time and unhurried sujood strengthen dependence on Allah and open space for dua.
  5. Believers should continue praying through fatigue, weak iman, and emotional distance.
  6. Missed prayers should lead to stopping the lapse and returning with confidence in Allah’s mercy.
Try this week
When the adhan sounds, consciously reframe prayer as something you get to do.
Arrange schedules around salah, such as praying Dhuhr before a 1:45 meeting.
Do not rush sujood; stay longer and make dua about parents, children, health, and relationships.
When iman is weak or you are tired, still perform the obligatory prayer, even if doing only the bare minimum.
If you have missed salah, stop the lapse, return to prayer, and refuse to let guilt block repentance.
Teach children that salah is an opportunity, not only an obligation.
Sources the khateeb cited
Sahih al-BukhariUses prayer at its proper time as the deed most beloved to Allah.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that salah is both a duty and a gift from Allah. The five prayers give us regular chances to pause, remember Allah, ask for help, and return to Him amid work, phones, worries, and family responsibilities. We should arrange our schedules around prayer, teach our children its value, and use sujood to make honest dua without rushing. Even when our iman feels weak or we have missed prayers, we should do the obligatory prayer, stop the pattern, and never believe our guilt is greater than Allah’s mercy. Allah understands what is in our hearts, and coming back to Him remains open.

  1. What is one thing you could pause and bring to Allah in sujood this week?
  2. How can we arrange one part of our family schedule around salah?
  3. What helps us return to prayer when we feel tired or guilty?
