Attach your heart to Allah, not dunya

“The most liberated people sometimes are those who Allah Azza wa Jal has given layers of trials.”

The khateeb, at 19:21

In one sentence

Because worldly attachments, status, possessions, and bodily life are temporary, believers should attach their hearts to Allah, measure success by their character and responsibilities, and prepare for the akhirah through honest dealings, repentance, and debt repayment.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. The dunya is temporary, so toxic attachment blinds people and believers should seek lasting attachment to Allah.
  2. Mortality and death reveal what truly matters, while faith prepares believers for the transition to the next life.
  3. Hubbu dunya is defined as toxic attachment that prioritizes worldly life over the akhirah and distorts judgment.
  4. Wealth, comfort, appearances, and blessings can imprison people; honest work matters, but character matters more than money.
  5. Private conduct, conflicts, promises, and entrusted responsibilities reveal whether a person is sincere or hypocritical.
  6. Believers should repair wrongs, repay debts, and leave worldly life prepared to meet Allah.

The khutbah reminds us that this world is temporary, so our deepest attachment should be to Allah and the lasting life to come. We can enjoy homes, work, relationships, and possessions, but we should not let them blind us or control our choices. The real test is the person we become while earning, arguing, making promises, and dealing with people in private. Before death, we should repair wrongs, repay debts, and prepare to meet Allah with sincere deeds.

  1. What matters more than the money we earn?
  2. How can we show good character when nobody is watching?
  3. Is there a wrong we should repair before it grows?
