Muslim reform needs consultation and fresh thinking
“Reality is evolving all the time, bringing new challenges, bringing new questions that were not there before.”
Muslim reform requires a proper understanding of Islam, history, and present reality, especially by rejecting legitimized dictatorship and renewing shura and ijtihad.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with gratitude to Allah and asks listeners to recognize blessings through words and deeds.
- Frames Muslim stagnation, failed reform efforts, and the need to recover as three questions.
- Presents proper understanding of the deen, history, and present reality as three conditions for successful reform.
- Argues that legitimizing dictatorship displaced shura, justice, equality, and accountability.
- Explains how closing ijtihad froze religious understanding while reality continued changing, making Islam seem irrelevant.
- Calls for renewed shura, ongoing ijtihad, and recovery of Islam’s social and ethical dimensions.
In the khateeb's words
“Justice is gone, equality, the concept of citizenship was gone. All Islamic political principles have gone.”
“So the text is fixed. But reality is evolving all the time. bringing new challenges, bringing new questions that were not there before.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb says Muslims need to be honest about why communities fall behind and why past reform efforts failed. He identifies three needs: understanding Islam properly, learning history honestly, and diagnosing present problems at their roots. He warns that accepting dictatorship weakened justice, consultation, equality, and accountability. He also explains that freezing ijtihad, careful effort to apply Islamic guidance to new situations, created a gap between fixed revelation and changing life. He encourages us to thank Allah, listen seriously, keep consultation alive, and seek thoughtful answers for today’s challenges.
- What blessing from Allah can you thank Him for today, and how could you use it for good?
- Why might listening to other people remain important even after a decision turns out badly?
- What question about modern life would you want a knowledgeable teacher to help you think through?
