Gratitude for Islam must shape character, family, and society
“The gift of Islam is the gift of knowing our Creator, worshipping our Creator and then knowing how to manifest that in our lives.”
In one sentence
Gratitude for the gift of Islam requires recognizing Allah's favor (minna) and manifesting the virtues of the faith at three levels: the individual soul, the family home, and society, especially through economic justice.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening: gratitude (shukr) as beholding the favor (minna) of Allah, per Abu Bakr al-Warraq
- Surah al-Baqarah 2:151-152: the favor of a messenger from among us who recites, purifies, and teaches
- Level one, the individual: spiritual cultivation through the virtues (courage, temperance, wisdom, gratitude, tawakkul); hadith on perfecting character; Surah al-Furqan on reliance on Allah
- Level two, the family: 'the best of you are the best to their wives' (Abu Dawud/Tirmidhi); Imam Malik on a man's obligation to be beloved in his home; the hadith qudsi on al-Rahman and the rahim (family ties)
- Level three, society: the virtue of justice and the Islamic economic system's prohibitions (riba, gharar, jahalah, hoarding, market manipulation)
- Critique of fiat currency, the Federal Reserve, and the U.S. national debt as systemic injustice; the price-fixing hadith and the Bedouin intermediary example
- Conclusion: Islam is the solution, teach it to neighbors, embody the virtues, and duas for the oppressed worldwide
